Strengthening families through practical health education
Somali Vulnerable Actors (SOVA) supports vulnerable and marginalized communities through programmes that turn humanitarian commitment into lasting change. In recent months, our teams have focused on maternal and child nutrition—helping caregivers adopt safer feeding practices and build healthier households.
What communities are learning
Through Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) promotion sessions, SOVA works with mothers, fathers, and community leaders to:
- Promote optimal breastfeeding and safe complementary feeding
- Improve maternal nutrition during pregnancy and after birth
- Share practical guidance caregivers can use every day at home
Sessions are delivered in accessible community settings, with local facilitators who understand cultural context and language.
Cooking demonstrations that make nutrition real
SOVA organises hands-on cooking demonstrations where participants prepare nutritious meals using locally available ingredients—including approaches linked to Tom Brown and the “one egg per day” campaign.
These demonstrations show families how to prepare balanced meals affordably, safely, and consistently, even in challenging environments.
Why this work matters
Malnutrition remains a serious risk for children and mothers in many parts of Somalia. By combining education, demonstration, and community participation, SOVA helps close the gap between knowledge and daily practice.
Looking ahead
SOVA remains committed to expanding community-led nutrition programming in Southwest, Jubbaland, Galmudug, Banadir, and Hirshabelle. For partnership inquiries, contact us at info@sovasomalia.org.
